COLORADO
PARKER HAWKS 34, Spartan White 13 - Coach Scott Barnes: "This was a good 4-1 team that had prepared for us - and to top it off, we had a storm blow in last night. Our field had 3 inches of snow when we arrived, and there had already been 3 games ahead of us! can you spell MUD? The snow started falling HEAVY and the wind was blowing HARD. You never know how a 9 year old will react to adverse conditions (heck, you never know how a PRO team will react!) - We were only up by 7 at the half, and my boys just didn't look like themselves - but they came out clicking in the 2nd half - they have a LOT of confidence in their ability to go 4 QTRS and they think the 4th is theirs alone! The other guys had stacked heavy to stop 88 because they knew my stud was at A. But they hadn't looked close enough - I have another kid that is just about as good, and a much tougher runner at C. I pounded 99 until they moved around, then went with 38 GO for a score - ran 88 a couple of times then hit them with XX47 (see a pattern here?) anyway - it was a tough one, but my boys came through big."
ILLINOIS
DEERFIELD YOUNG WARRIORS 22, Winnetka 6 - Coach Keith Babb: "We ended up playing 2 different QB's, 2 A-backs, 3 B-backs, and 3 C-backs. We had no fumbles and gave up no first downs until the 4th quarter when they scored on our younger players. We are now 3 and 3 (we finished 2 and 6 last year) and have 2 more games. Ironically, we've won on weekends the Chicago Bears have lost and vice versa. I'm glad the Bears have a tough schedule the next 2 weeks."
MASSACHUSETTS
ATTLEBORO 35, Carver 6 - Coach Fred Pardey, Jr.: "We are having fun. The kids think the wedge is our secret weapon...You know that feeling you get when the play works like you teach it to work? We had two out of the wedge at 2 go 6 yds and the B back come out of the pile and go all the way."
NEW HAMPSHIRE
MANCHESTER BEARS 31, Portsmouth 0 - Bears score on first five possessions, rush for 228 first-half yards on 17 carries.
NEW JERSEY
LOWER CAPE MAY RAIDERS 14, Upper Township 0 - Coach Frank Simonsen: "It was not easy. He doesn't have much speed so he put his biggest strongest people in the back field and ran leads Tackle to Tackle. They kept the ball the entire 1st. quarter. We finally stopped them on the 5 and ran Powers and Wedges on different counts (Go, 2nd hut, etc.) to keep them from teeing off on us. We brought it out to about the 30 when our CB, ripped a 99 Power for a 70 yd.. TD. The second half was sloppy- we gave up 3 fumbles.. With about 3 min. left and our Defense playing great I was content to get out of there with the 6 - 0 win,. so I stayed with the Powers. We needed 2 yds. for what I hoped would be a 1st down to help run out the clock. I called for a Wedge on go, we put his big boy flat on his back, and our B-Back broke out for a 40 yd. TD."
UTAH
TAYLORSVILLE 27 - Bingham 20 - Coach Al Andrus: "Coming off a tough loss last week to the state champs in their division, we responded with a good offensive effort against a very tough team. Early, the power and counter were clicking. They adjusted by really stacking the outside. We responded with two long TD drives using almost exclusively 4 and 5 base lead, and 2 wedge. We kept their high powered passing attack off the field in the second half."
