SEEN AT THE 2003 TWIN-CITIES CLINIC

The 2003 Twin Cities clinic was held for the second year in a row at Benilde-St. Margaret's School, in suburban Minneapolis, through the courtesy of Coach Joe Gutilla. Coach Gutilla was kind enough to share his thoughts on staff and practice organization, and in the afternoon a group of his players was kind enough to come in - they were on spring break - to demonstrate plays and techniques for the coaches. I high point for me was seeing dear old friends Paul Herzog, of Woodbury, MInnesota and Don Capaldo of Keokuk, Iowa, two of the oldest of the old Double-Wing guys (in terms of running the offense, not in terms of age). Paul is now at his second school; his first place with the Double-Wing was North St. Paul, where he turned the program around. When he left North after eight years to go to Woodbury, he was succeeded by former assistant Jim Honsa. Jim said he's sure that his intention to run the Double-Wing helped get him the job - he said that the number one thing people wanted to know was, "will you still run the offense?" North has continued to thrive under Jim - this year, Paul and Jim met in the playoffs!
