WINNERS - WEEKEND OF 10-18-02

DALEVILLE, AL - Daleville 35, Dale County 20

COLUMBIA, AL - Houston County 41, Florala 25

DANA POINT, CA - SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY PATRIOTS 6, Southbay Packers 0 - Coach Wyatt, By sticking with meat and potatoes, the South Orange County Patriots (7-0) upset the previously unbeaten and unscored upon Southbay packers (6-1) 6 to ZERO. This locks up the league championship at the Clinic level (9-10 year olds). After we win next week, we will secure the top seed in the play-offs. I believe we would have scored at least two more times if the game had been officiated fairly. On almost every wedge, the refs falsely claimed that our wing backs were pushing the B back. We actually did score on a 6 yard Wedge @ 2, but I called for 56-C XX backfield motion so the refs couldn't accuse us of "pushing". On our final drive, the refs suddenly disallowed our game ball, claiming it was underinflated, so they made us run several plays on a wet field with a rock hard plastic "toy-store" ball. They still couldn't stop us. Al Bellanca

GRAND JUNCTION, CO -. EAST 49ERS 40, Fruita Cowboy's 14: Great win!! On to the Super Bowl. God bless the Double Wing!! Thank's again Hugh for all your advice. Ted Quinton.

OVIEDO, FL - OVIEDO LIONS 26, South Brevard Cougars 6 - The Oviedo Lions Youth Football Pee Wee team (age 11/12) claimed their 5th victory in a row with a 26-6 win over the South Brevard Cougars. The Lions (6-2) used the Wedge effectively for the entire game, getting 80 yards on 13 attempts. Overall, we rushed for 217 yards on 34 carries and were 3 for 4 passing for 30 yards and one TD on a Tight Lightning Throwback. Lee Griesemer

PLANTATION, FL - PLANTATION WILDCATS 40, Coral Springs 0 (7 & 8 yrs old) We are still undefeated (9-0). We had to take out our WB's in the first quarter because we were ahead by 20 points. The team we played was a Pee Wee version of the run and shoot. I shook my head after watching so many passes falling incomplete. I could only wonder how much better the team could have been if they had been practicing how to run the ball instead of passing so much. Mike Kahn

UMATILLA, FL - UMATILLA 16, Eustis 13 - Well it sure wasn't easy, but we scored both of our touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Eustis and clinch a playoff spot from our district with a 16-13 win. They had a pretty good scheme against us, and we were pretty banged up on the offensive line, but hung in there and scored the TD's on 38 G-O Reach and 29 G-O Reach and each PAT WITH 47 AND 56 COUNTERS. Down 7-0 at half our defense did not give up a first down in the second half, but did give up a TD pass. We are currently 3-0 in the district and have two more district games each of the next two weeks. Ron Timson

FREDERICKSBURG, IA - FREDERICKSBURG 42, Valley of Elgin 12. In one of the best displays of DW football the Falcons of Fredericksburg beat the 6-0, 5th rated Tigers of Valley 42-12. Running 88&99 power, 47&56C ,29&39GO reach with a wedge thrown in now and then, the Falcons rolled up 359 yds rushing against the top defense team in our district. A-back Neil Suckow 22 att 144yds 3 TDs, C-back Ryan Gruenberg 18 att 161yds 2TDs and B-back Matt Burkey 10 att 48yds. QB Clayton Niewoehner was 3 for 3 in the passing 38yds and rushed for 1TD. Steve Staker

HOLSTEIN, IA - GALVA-HOLSTEIN 54, Southern Cal 0 - 28 rushes 395 yards; 1 for 1 passing 41 yards; 9 first downs (we only played 26 minutes of the game). A Back 6 carries 133 yards 2 TD's; B Back 3 carries 57 yards 2 TD's; C Back 9 carries 119 yards 2 TD's (1 catch 41 yards); QB 3 carries 51 yards; 2nd B Back 5 carries 26 yards 1 TD; 2nd A+C Back 2 carries 9 yards (also returned 3 punts for 104 and 1 TD); Dominated the 5-3 defense (ran only 3 plays from slot right); Held them to 68 yards of offense and 1 first down; 20 rushes for 33 yards, 1 of 4 passing for 35 yards and 1 INT; Showed we belong at the top of our district, and we also deserve the #2 ranking in the state. Brad Knight

ALTON, IL - ALTON 34, Granite City 23 - Coach Wyatt, The Alton Redbirds won again on Friday night. 34-23. At Halftime the score was 34-15. We had 400 yards rushing on 35 carries in the first half. Our A back had 228 yards on 15 carries in the first half. The all night rains took the toll on the field in the second half and neither team could move. Hey Coach this is still big school football and the double-wing has put up over 800 yards of rushing in the last two weeks. Coach Brad Hasquin

BLOOMINGDALE, IL - BLOOMINGDALE BEARS 27, Glendale Heights Spartans 7- After finishing 7-1 and gaining the top seed in the BGYFL playoffs at the 90lb Gold division we started our march to the state championship with a big win over a very good football team. Once again we unleashed our vaunted air attack with 2 red-red passes that covered 40 plus yards on both attempts. QB Erick King once again was on target as he hit C-Back Brandon Salemi for a pair of td's. We tried our 99 SP QB keeper for the first time all year and King broke it for a nice 45 yard td!! Great job by our backs today! A-back Christian Bartnicki had a nice day on the ground scoring on a 40 yard run off 88 SP, B back Clay Cooper ran well between the tackles and scored a td on tight 2 wedge. Well, it's off to the semifinals and hopefully we can continue our march to the state tournament. Hope all is well coach! I'll be calling you to pick your brain on a few things this week! Coach Stacey King

HANOVER PARK, IL - HANOVER PARK 80 LB. HURRICANES 80lb. 26 Buffalo Grove 6 - Hanover Park gets a quarterfinal win against a big team. Score was 7-6 at the half and I felt we were really getting pushed around by a bigger team. However, in the second half the defense stiffened and we scored on three straight drives. Javaun McDonald broke two wedges for long touchdown runs. Wingbacks Andrew Homere and Aaron Thabuteau both scored on counter plays to round out the scoring. This Saturday we play the #3 seeded Lombard Falcons. Bill Lawlor

OLYMPIA FIELDS, IL - RICH CENTRAL 28, Rich South 12 - Victor Boles carried 22 times for 148 yards, Segun Ayeni, although hobbled by a sprained ankle that kept him out of action the week before, broke a trap for a 69-yard score, and former soccer player Idris Amao hit a 49-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, as the Olympians locked up a playoff spot and moved to 5-2 in Conference. A win over Kankakee next Friday would give them a share of the conference title for the first time since 1986.

LEAWOOD, KS - EAST LANCERS 40, SM Northwest Cougars 0. The 5th Grade SM East Lancers concluded their fine season with a pounding of the SM Northwest Cougars. The Lancers won convincingly 40-0 on the strength of their speed and 88/99 Power plays. Hard running all day long and great team defense against a physical group of Cougars made the difference. Michael Rutherford

GLENELG, MD - GLENELG 28, Oakland Mills 13 - Glenelg (7-0) ran its league winning streak to 21, runnign 37 second-half plays to Oakland Mills' 10. "Against Glenelg, you have to get a lead so they have to gamble and just can't hold the ball," said Oakland Mills coach Ken Hovet. "Their size wore on us. And they are disciplined and don't get out of their game."

SALISBURY, MD - WICOMICO PANTHERS (9-12yr olds) 42, Princess Anne 18 - Coaches, the double wing today finally shut people up in the stands. We had 406 yards on 44 carries and had the ball for more than half the game. We were also 2-3 passing, scored on the 88 power pass (that my brother said that he ran under Frank!!) We had scores on wedge, superpower, and 47-C. It was a great day, our kids executed great and now everyone has confidence in this offense. With 3 games left, we should be able to finish the season off strong. Thanks coaches for your help!! Mike Wilson (Mike, a student at Salisbury State University, is making great strides as a coach. He played for Frank Simonsen in Cape May, New Jersey, and learned most of what he's doing from Frank. HW)

THURMONT, MD - CATOCTIN 21, South Hagerstown 20 - Catoctin, which finished 1-9 last year, improves to its best start since 1986 as South Hagerstown scores on the game's final play but misses on the conversion. South Hagerstown went for two and appeared to have scored the winning points, but the pass was completed to a guard. "I guess in the heat of the moment he decided to run down the field, too," said South Hagerstown Coach Greg Kellick. "It looked pretty, but in high school we don't have the tackle eligible play. The officials made the right call."

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME - BOOTHBAY REGION 28, Lisbon 14 - Good Morning Hugh, The Seahawks went 7-0 on Saturday afternoon defeating a tough Lisbon team 28-14. The game started like a track meet with both teams scoring on their first two possessions. We had 125 yards in the first period on four plays - scoring on our first play with a 50 yard 47 XX lead. The next time we had the ball we scored in three plays - 10 yard 88 Super Power, 30 yard 6G, and a 20 yard 47 XX Lead. Jack Tourtillotte

GORHAM, ME - GORHAM 42, Fryeburg Academy 20 - We rolled out to an impressive 29-0 lead in the first half with my starting A & C backs hitting the 100 yard mark and my backup A back getting close to the 100 yard mark. Moved to 4-3 on the season and have reached one of our goals of getting back into the play-offs. Dave Kilborn

NORTH FARMINGTON, MI - NFWB VARSITY VIKINGS 16 (8-0), Royal Oak Chargers 6. We managed to play through our "All we have to do is show up" funk and got a win against a very tough and highly motivated Charger team. We got a break early in the game, when, on 4th and a mile, the Chargers passed and we intercepted and ran it back to their five. We punched it in and kicked the extra point for an 8-0 lead. Luckily our defense played outstanding as usual since our offense was not executing well (going through the motions) and the Chargers were really "charged" up. We gave up a big play and the Chargers scored from one yard out to close within 2. Our offense woke up and quickly scored another TD and 2 point kick for a 16-6 score. Shortly thereafter, we scored another TD but it was called back on a block in the back call. We clinched 1st place in the league with the win (a first for the Vikings) and will most likely play the Chargers again in the first round of the playoffs. Donnie Hayes

TROY, MI - TROY COWBOYS 20, Madison Heights Wolverines 6 - Hi coach: We played a very tough and physical 6-1 football team and made them 6-2, but it wasn't easy. We won 20-6 running our record to 7-1 and headed for the playoffs in two weeks. We were pretty balanced with 86 yards rushing (2 tds) on 22 attempts and 67 yards passing (1 td) going 3-4. We scored on the 3 trap @ 2, option right and a 46 yard fade. It wasn't easy and their offense ate tons of clock grinding it out on the ground thereby keeping us from putting up better numbers. We had our local double wing guru, coach Rick Desotel, on the sidelines, so it was fun to show our double wing progress to him. After three years of running the DW, we feel pretty confident we are doing it justice that it richly deserves. God Bless coach, David Livingstone

COLUMBIA, MS - COLUMBIA 23, West Marion 12 - We won Thursday night over West Marion in a Division 8-AAA batlle. 23-12. Cory (Jones) had 178 yards on 17 carries. B back had 105 on 20 carries. we are 4-4 over-all and 3-1 in our division. Steve Jones

COLUMBUS, NE - COLUMBUS SCOTUS 35, Columbua Lakeview 20 - Hello again from the Irish (Notre Dame) state of Nebraska. We moved to 2-5 at Columbus Scotus with a 35-20 romp over rival Columbus Lakeview. We were up 35-7 late in the fourth quarter. Coach, I never thought I'd ever say this, but what a pass offense this thing is. We were 12-17 passing for 227 yards and four touchdowns. They were absolutely huge up front, and they sold out to stop the run with 10 guys in the box. They held us to 120 yards rushing, but we were wide open in the secondary all night long. Thanks coach for everything. By the way, with one more win next week, we are probably in the playoffs because of our points with the schedule we had. God bless, Coach Steve Cozad

CAPE MAY, NJ - LOWER CAPE MAY RAIDERS 30, Middle Township 0 - Hugh, We only ran the starters in the 1st and 3 periods. Ran 43 T trap Draw twice 1 for 15 and 1 for 10, I love that play. We put on a passing show, our A-Backs was 6 for 8 - no TDs., but all for 20 or more yds. We have found that if the OE and WB really understand the call for double team (we simply use 1 or 2 with the opposite E making a dummy call) it is almost impossible to stop SP. Later. Frank Simonsen

LANSINGBURGH, NY - LANSINGBURGH 68, Ravenna 8 - Marcel Youngs carried 12 times for 215 yards, and tied a New York state record with eight touchdowns - five rushing, one receiving and two on returns. Marcel, who had 482 all-purpose yards, said he dedicated his efforts to his grandmother, who died last Sunday. "He is a great kid and now we're 7-0 and getting ready for our 2nd season - the playoffs. Pete Porcelli

PAINTED POST, NY - CORNING WEST 40, Elmira Southside 7 - Sophomore Dan Giannone, who had never played a down of QB until four weeks ago, threw for a TD, and Chris Clark, moved from A-Back to B-Back, rushed for 143yards abd 2 tds on 20 carries as West won its third straight and improved to 4-2. MIke Johnston

QUEENSBURY, NY - QUEENSBURY Coach, 42, South Glens Falls 0 - We won our last regular season Game. Glens Falls, a team we beat, defeated Hudson Falls, the team that beat us earlier in the season-result, a 3 way tie for the league championship. Sectional seeding for the playoffs is Sunday morning. John Irion

DANBURY, TX - DANBURY 34, Brookshire-Royal 27 - We won our second district game Friday at Brookshire Royal 34-27. At one point in the 2nd quarter we had them down 20-0 but we acquired a dose of ball security problems and they came back strong. They had a GREAT tailback, ran for 224 yds. Oh well, a win is a win. We rushed 58 times for 438 yds. B-back Patrick Kelley ran for 158 yds. on 20 carries, A-back Joe Bulanek ran for 146 yds and 1 TD on 24 carries and C-back Chris Sodek had 127 yds and 2 TDs on only 8 carries. Sodek also had a 75 yd interception for another TD. Next up is Hitchcock, who is 5-1. They are new to our district, having dropped down a class in the last state re-alignment. They run a no huddle, shotgun spread. Ought to be interesting, huh? Talk to ya soon. Don Davis

JOAQUIN, TX - JOAQUIN 63, Price Carlisle 6 - We totaled 501 yards rushing and 54 yards passing (1-1-1TD, 54 yards). My A-back, Bradley Gandy rushed for 282 yards on 12 carries and scored 3 times. The C-back's had 109 yards on 3 carries and the B-back's had 110 yards on 6 carries. Bradley is now the first player in school history (70 plus years) to rush for over 1000 yards in a season. He now has 1408 yards on 127 carries and has scored 15 TD's, in 7 games. He is the #3 rusher in the State of Texas in our classification and #1 rusher in the East Texas area, all classifications. Wayne Gandy (1st year running the DW at Joaquin)

PETERSBURG, TX - PETERSBURG 28, Sudan 21

ROANOKE, VA - CAVE SPRING STAMPEDE 36, Vinton Titans 12 - Double Wing strikes again!Again! Last game of season.First game of the playoff Cave Spring Stampede 54-7 over North Botetourt Knights.Next playoff game tuesday.Hope to keep rolling. We finished season 10-0.Avg.Points scored 38.8.Scored against 6.4. Best Wishes, Rolando Castro

ROANOKE, VA (PLAYOFFS) CAVE SPRING STAMPEDE 52, Central Botetourt Cavaliers 31 -.What a frustrating game this has turned out to be here in Roanoke County. You go up by 24 points? - ball on 10 yard line. If team does not make it? Get the ball on the 5 yard line. All 31 of this team's points came this way. The frustrating thing is seeing our kids literally suffering because in their mind the other team is gaining on them. Give you an example. We were moving ball off the 5 yard line. We are on our 45 yard line. Throw a red-red pass. Ball is slick as heck. Interception. Tackled right away. Referee moves them up to the 10 yard line to score. Armando Castro

EDMONDS, WA - EDMONDS CYCLONES 46, Stanwood Spartans 0 - This game was all 6 & 7 G along with 88 & 99 Super Power. 47c xx always seems to work at my level at some point in the game. Our opponents just don't spend enough time preparing for this offense. Well, I also don't think they have enough time. I made a few player adjustments to our defense and it worked really well. We also kicked for four extra point try's, which is no small feat at this level. We run the "Swinging Gate", it's very effective and fun to watch the other team stand in bewilderment. Glade Hall

BLOOMER, WI - BLOOMER 46, Northwestern 13 - Hi Coach- Friday night's score 46-13 over conference rival and 2 time past state champ's Northwestern( they are our biggest rival and WERE the premier running team in northwestern wisconsin until the past 5 years). Bloomer rushed for 345 on 63 carries including 5 td's and 3pat's (kicked the other 2). 15 different ball carriers against a state ranked team. This victory secured the Conference title and positions us for a #1 seed in the playoffs. FYI since the Heart of the North conference began in 1930 Bloomer has won 23 conference titles even though we are the 5th biggest school, for many years (50's 60's) the smallest school of 8 teams. We've now rushed for 2300+ yds to our opponents 740, not bad for 8 games!! thanks again for letting the world know about the DW!! Scott Beranek
