YOUTH/MIDDLE SCHOOL/FRESHMAN
2000 SUCCESSES
BASED ON COACHES' OWN REPORTS
ALABAMA
MUNFORD LIONS 12, Saks 6 (11&12 year olds) Coach Carl Dozier: "We had 3 long touchdown runs called back on penalties. We ended the first half inside their 1 yard line and fumbled on their 1 yard line on another drive. Their only score came as the result of a blocked punt (our only punt of the night). Saks was a much bigger team but we were able to run on them all night. Thanks for your system!!"
ARIZONA
Yuma Scorpions 20 - Sun Devils 0: Coach Stew Stewart: "We pulled it out, after a bye last week and being hit with the flu "bug, we didn't look as sharp as we have been. We started out running 4 99's in a row, when the coaches started hollering "watch out for #37", we run the boot leg and scored then we started going inside and scored again. The ref made a comment about the linemen's feet being lined up as deep as the quarterback's. I told him that it didn't matter where their feet were as long as their heads broke the center's waistline. I didn't hear anything else from him so I guess he agreed. Found out that he's one of the coaches of a team we will be playing in two weeks. Great way of being scouted!!! Thanks."
*********** "Coach, Just to let you know we finished up 7-1-1. Not bad for a team that had 28 out of 32 kids (7, 8 & 9) that had never played organized football before and a coach that had never run the DW. As the year went on, I felt more comfortable coaching it and calling plays. I agree with Coach Urbaniak about the parents appreciating the DW more when they can sit up high enough to see the entire system working. We played several games at high school fields where they could get up higher and see the entire team working together. After each game, more and more parents jumped on the bandwagon. I will be ordering your "Troubleshooting the Double Wing" in the near future. Thanks." L. E. "Stew" Stewart, Yuma Scorpions, Yuma, Arizona
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
NORTH DELTA COLTS 50 - Langley Rebels 0 (Colts finish the season 9-1). Coach Roger Kelly: "The Colts finished the regular season by scoring seven touchdowns in the final game and 311 yards in offense. We used the 88 and 99 SPs almost all day with five different players scoring. My two A backs combined for three while the C backs scored two with the B back and QB adding one each. We were trying to set up for the pass but scored too fast for that sometimes. We head into the playoffs next week against the sixth place Cloverdale Cougars who battled us three weeks ago. But we have learned from that game. One game at a time... By the way, at least three other teams now try to use the wedge..."
CALIFORNIA
CENTRAL VALLEY BULLDOGS 13, Sutter 8 - Coach Don Hodson - "We played at 10AM on Saturday pretty early for this age group. We won 13-8 against a good team from Sutter. Passed for 89 yards and rushed for 274 yards. Nor-Cal Championship game is this Saturday vs. a great team from Colusa they lost only one game this year. But we're a good team also with a 7-2 record 5-0 in league and 1-0 in the playoffs so far."
CYPRESS CHARGERS 6 La Habra Lions - 0 - Coach Christian Thomas: "Our post season play continues with a Victory. Defense came through and scored the touchdown (Thanks Guys!!). We were in the red zone 4 times and penalties shoved us back each time. We installed the 47C/56C Shuffle 2 weeks ago and have been giving it some reps...It Works...we ran it 3 times for a net gain of over 45 Yards. 88/99SP worked as usual as did 2 wedge. We gave them many different looks and mixed it up very well. 1-3 Passing for 15 yds. Total rushing 165+ Once again no fumbles!!! which I directly attribute to the "Rip & Strip" drill. Thanks Coach Wyatt."
*********** "Coach,I coach the pee-wee division Charter Oak Youth Football (10-12 year olds). I have been with these kids since they were 8. In three years of football we could only win 2 out of 8 games per year and we never put up more than 40 total points per year. Last year we ran a half-assed version of a double wing and made all the mistakes. I spoke with my staff and told them we were changing to your system. I purchased the material and we all began meeting in March and the entire staff learned the system.
"I had others tell me it will not work because you can't teach pull both guards and tackles. The QB will not master the footwork etc. The staff held firm on their commitment to this system.
"Well we finished 5-3 this year and scored 151 points. 4 of the 8 teams were in the playoffs last year. We had 2 two in a row where we were shut out. I read your article on looking hard at what went wrong. I found it and switched my TE to B back and our kick outs went from 60% to 90% and we started rolling again. The last 2 games were a test of heart. We were down in both games and during a time out we told our kids to trust in the system and trust each other and don't quit!!!!!!. Well they put up 38 points in 15 min. and 21 points in 10 min the next game winning both games by 18 points.
"We filmed every game and if you are ever interested in material geared strictly for the youth level let me know. We know exactly where we need to spend the majority of our time next year. In 2 of our loses we were just flat out played and got man-handled but then again it happens.
LOS GATOS TIGERS 7, Almaden Chargers 0 - Coach Jim Carlton: " The game wasn't nearly as close as the score indicates. We had two more scoring opportunities (on the 7 and the 4) and I put my 2nd and 3rd team offenses in to give them a shot at the end zone."
NIPOMO COWBOYS 30, Santa Ynez Pirates 20 - Coach Jim Chambers: "We ran over slot and swept them for 300 yards. The kids are catching on well, as I have told you I have run the Single-wing for two years and I think the similarity in blocking schemes and overall philosophy has made it an easy transition."
SOUTH VALLEY PANTHERS (Van Nuys) 25, Westside Bulldogs 0 - Coach Bill Shine: "It was a rainy Saturday morning so the beginning drive was somewhat sloppy....99 P/SP was open all day. Our C back Raen Baggett has been coming on the last 3 games and running the plays textbook. C back ran for over 130yds and scored on a 47-C with a 70 yd run. A back Mikell Roy ran tough and scored on a 30 yd 88 P. B back Carlos Lopez added another TD breaking a 2 Wedge for a 40 yd TD. The Panthers are rolling Coach as we approach the first round of playoffs this Sunday. The line is starting to gel and get after people with a lot more confidence as we look to go into another undefeated team this weekend."
*********** "Hi Coach, I wanted to thank you for helping to make my first year of coaching tackle football a success. I coached Pop Warner kids (age 11-14). Our team went 9 and 1 in the regular season, with the only loss due to a fluke interception return for a touchdown.
"Although we lost in the playoffs 22-16, the other team was 10 and 0, and considerably bigger, faster, and better coached.
"The kids really had fun with the offense, and we even added a few things for fun, like a direct snap to the B-Back (through the QB's legs)--e.g., Tight Rip Houdini 7-G. (The QB and the A-Back run to the right after the snap, and the linebackers usually go with them, while the B-Back runs a 7-G.) We also had some great play action passes but, of course, the misdirection plays were the best. I really tried to teach the techniques, stances, etc. that are in your book and video, since they have already been tested and proved. Anyway, we had a lot of fun, and I appreciate your help.
"I would love to try this offense at the high school level. Maybe some day I will get the chance. (My son starts high school next year, and he is now a believer too.) Thanks again, Coach! Hope you are having a good season. Sincerely, Larry Murnane, San Diego, California"
COLORADO
KERSEY COUGARS 34, Weld Central Rebels - Coach John Dillon: A classic smash-mouth football game - Double-Wing vs the I formation. The Double-Wing flexed its muscle CLASSIC SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL GAME - DOUBLE WING VERSE THE I FORMATION. THE DOUBLE WING FLEXED IT'S MUSCLE THIS GAME. THIS WIN PLACES THE COUGARS IN THE HUNT FOR THE LEAGUE TITLE WITH TWO GAMES REMAINING.
CONNECTICUT
CROMWELL LIONS 48, Colchester 0 - Coach Steve Crescimano: "29 carries 368yds First time ever senior division opens up two and zero plus an awesome defense with back to back shut outs. Great way to start, with a fantastic offense(DW) I tip my hat to you coach. Many thanks."
WEST HARTFORD GIANTS 38, JETS 14 - Coach Greg Cheverier: "The peewee giants (10-11yrs) are now 5-0 after beating the jets 38-14. The 3 trap at 2 scored from 25yds. The wedge was run 6 times and resulted in no less than 7yds an attempt, 2 td's and 2 xpt conversions. The super-power resulted in 1 td and at one pt in the game was called 11 times in a row. The 47c did not score this week but resulted in no less then 10yds a carry. The kids love the system and it involves everyone on the team. The fake wedge- c-back reverse has scored 7 out of 7 times, in four games! Thanks for everthing!"
*********** "After a 2-8 season last year we went 9-1, came in first in the division, outscored our opponents 270-80, and won the league superbowl. The kids and parents loved the system because everyone was involved in every playi.e. pulling , trapping, cutting everyone had an important job. 10-11 yr olds ran the super-power, the wedge, 6/7 g, the 6/7c, the criss-cross, the trap, and the sprint series. We also made afew plays up like the fake wedge reverse, the option, and the 6g fb option pass. If these kids can learn the plays (no changes were made from your playbook) any high school or jr high team can. A tape will be enroute shortly. Hope your season went well. Coach Greg Cheverier, West Hartford, Connecticut"

"Coach, we have had an enormous amount of success this season with
the DW. Our Varsity PeeWee team (11,12,&13yr.olds) went 12-0
and won their FIRST Suncoast Youth Football Conference
Championship last Saturday. Throughout the season we outscored our
opponents 332- 62! Our players (although skeptical at first),
coaches and fans loved this offense. Who wouldnt, with those kind
of numbers? Simply Awesome! We have now been invited to play in a
Championship Tournament against other Championship teams from
nearby counties. The final game is to be played in Raymond James
Stadium on Dec. 6. We are very excited to be playing teams that
have never seen our DW.Championship Game note- With the game tied at zero and under 5 mins. to play, we were pinned back on our own 8yd. line with 4th and inches. Punt? Nope, 3 Wedge was the call and we picked up two for the first down. This late in the season, everyone knew the play and probably figured it was coming, but there was know way our boys were'nt going to get a yard on our linemans favorite play. Our next play was tight rocket 3 basic and our B-Back went for 85yds. HUGE! Final- Falcons 8 Chiefs 6
Finally, we have good kids, a good staff, and a great system, but nothing is more valuable than hard work and execution. Thank You Coach Wyatt. Coach Denis Gillen, Dunedin, Florida
WELLINGTON DOLPHINS 30, Royal Palm Cowboys 0 - Coach Jack Brown: "Coach Wyatt, I never played past my sophomore year in high school. It's my third year coaching youth football. Ee received your "dynamics" video the day before our first practice in sept. this year. We're 7-1, having lost only to a travel team from Pahokee FL. Last year I was 4-4 and scored 78 pts all year. We scored our 200th point Saturday Oct. 28 in another 30-0 mercy rule game. We've only been stopped on downs once this year. We haven't punted. I'm still learning how to call plays! Saturday, when ahead by 3 touchdowns, I wanted to work on 43 tackle trap. Our tackle missed his block twice in a row. Now it's 3rd & 10 so I run criss-cross 56 c to get the first down. Well, you guessed it, my A back ran a 50 yd td. Undaunted, again, I call for 43 ttr to get a 2 point conversion. By now the entire offensive line is yelling at our rt tackle to BLOCK # 56!!! Well, my C back saw the biggest hole he's seen all year. We've got one game left. Thanks for this offense. the playbook and tapes eliminated a lot of the mystery that prevented me from scoring in the past. As a matter of fact, one of my dads is a retired NY jet wide receiver, he says that he has never seen such a comprehensive playbook and asked me to coach his son again next year. Now i need to learn how to coach defense. Thanks again.Go W."
GEORGIA
MIDWAY GOLD PACKERS 28, Sharon Springs Royal Cowboys 7 - Coach Dave Clark: Coach Wyatt Well, we finally broke out the double wing in our first regular season game and it was pretty good. The 88's and 99's were a little sloppy but even when they weren't especially good we still got 3 or 4 yds. The defense threw us off a little because they brought up the corners outside the split out DE's and our fullback started trying to kickout the outside CB. This led to a little congestion in our running lane. I should have seen the problem but I guess the game excitement clouded my vision. Next time we'll make adjustments plus the boys will know their blocking assignments better. They ran 4 men on the line and we shredded them with the 3 trap at 2 - 20 yd TD and another run of 15 yds. to the 1 yd line. It sure looks pretty on tape. I guarantee that the 11-12 yr olds in our park can't run a play that looks that good. We hope to do better this week after a little more practice on our pulling techniques. The guards/tackles were a little slow to their wall-off positions on the 88/99 and need more reps."
*********** "Coach Wyatt's offense is incredible and really made the season a success. We finished the year 11-0 and without a doubt the best 9-10 team ever in this park. Coach Wyatt, please let me know when you are giving a clinic close to Atlanta and we will be there. Thanks" Dave Clark, Cumming, Georgia
*********** The Double Wing is the king. Hugh Wyatt's system is incredible and I can say that from experience. I have been coaching for 3 years and decided to run the Double Wing this year. This year was the first year that I really felt in control and confident about what the boys were being taught. Most of the kids on the team really didn't know how to block very well or for that matter couldn't get into a 3-point stance without looking down at the ground. We implemented Hugh's system at the very first practice (with a tremendous amount of assistance from Scott Barnes through emails) and stayed with it through the entire season. We drilled on blocking, 3-point stance, pulling/trapping, etc. every practice and it really paid off. Our team went undefeated (11-0) and won the County Championship. Our offensive line was not big or fast but all those kids coming through one hole is confusing and really works. This was definitely one of those "once in a lifetime" seasons where, (1)the system worked, (2)we had a talent base and (3)the kids really worked hard towards our goal of winning the championship. Get the playbook and the videotapes and you guys will be on your way to success. Let me know if I can help in any way. Dave Clark - Midway Packers, Cumming, Georgia
ILLINOIS
DEERFIELD YOUNG WARRIORS 26, Maine East 14 - Coach Keith Babb- "Maine East played a 7 diamond defense and their best player lined up at nose. As such we gave them a steady dose of 88 and 99 super power. Our C back had an awesome game scoring on a 65 yard run and a 70 yard shuffle (shovel) pass. We also scored on Red Red and 88 s.p. We managed to play three different lines - so I hope we are getting deeper. Our defense is getting better as we picked off 4 passes today. Our 3rd string defense gave up a late score to make the score look closer. We are now 3 and 1 and looking forward to our last 3 games. I like how our team bounced back from last week's defeat."
FRANKFORT WILDCATS 7, Hickory Hills 6 - Coach Rob Swaim: "Today we overcame horrible officiating to beat the undefeated team in 2 OT. We were flagged 12 times to ZERO, with 2 of those coming on TD's, and 3 holding penalties in the 1st overtime. With such a flexible offense and with a few games under our belts we are able to adjust to any situation that is thrown at us. The 66/77 SP's are great plays and have worked for us all season, especially when the other teams start to key on your motion. Rushed for over 200 yards on a field covered with snow and mud. This win now makes us 4-1 and puts us into the playoffs!!"
HANOVER PARK HURRICANES 32, Wheaton 15 - State 110-pound Semi-Finals - Coach Bill Lawlor: "Today was about as fulfilling a day as one can have. We qualified for the BGYFL Super Bowl at Northern Illinois University at the 110 Gold Level. This team has been division bottom feeders for three years and now the kids and the parents are going nuts!! B-back Tre Porter pounded for close to 200 yards and three touchdowns, mostly off of 3 trap at 2 and 6-G. Joey Mueller got it going with a forty yard touchdown run off of Slot Liz 88 Super-O. Left end Alex Flores had a 35 yard touchdown pass off of a throwback. Wheaton only scored in the fourth quarter after they got the ball on our 30 due to the courtesy rule when we were up by 32 points. Next stop Husky Stadium and the Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles. Hugh, it took me two months to really get this offense clicking, but we have basically unstoppable on O the last month. It is a credit to your offense and the philosophy of football I have learned from people I have met at your clinics over the years. Thank you and I will keep you posted. I am thinking that we will bring back some Spread Sprint sweeps this week as it is a fast astro turf over there."
*********** Coach John Urbaniak, line coach of the Hanover Park Hurricanes, Illinois state 110-pound champions, makes an interesting point. He believes that because they were playing in the championship game and for once were playing at a large stadium (Northern Illinois University), the parents sat up higher, rather than standing on the sidelines, and could better see the intricacies of the Double-Wing. He wrote, " I can tell you the parents were thrilled with the execution on both sides of the ball but especially on offense. They got to see it from the stands of a large stadium from the vantage point that they could see what the linemen were doing." Even better, he wrote, "Our execution was flawless!" Once again, I believe that the more you can do to help parents understand what you are doing, why you are doing it and how you are doing it, the less they will complain about whatever it is that you are doing.
*********** Coach Bill Lawlor of Hanover Park, Illinois, is in the state Bill George Youth League (named for the great Bears' linebacker) Finals for the second straight year. Last year it was not unexpected, because, frankly, he was loaded. I saw some tape of his kids, and they did a heck of a job running the Double-Wing. Combine talent with good coaching and good offensive and defensive systems, and you're going to be tough. But this year, he took over a new team whose kids hadn't done very well in the past, and the early going was shaky at times. But his kids gelled, and in last weekend's state semi-finals, defeated Wheaton, 32-15. "Today was about as fulfilling a day as one can have," Coach Lawlor wrote me. "We qualified for the BGYFL Super Bowl at Northern Illinois University at the 110 Gold Level. I am thinking that we will bring back some Spread Sprint sweeps this week as it is a fast astro turf over there."
HAZEL CREST MUSTANGS 12, Country Club Hills Cougars 6, (2 OT) Coach Nick Moyenda: "Laurence Henning scored in the second OT using 5X from ten yards out, it was a thing of beauty. Eight wins in a row. Up next a rematch with the only team that defeated the Hazel Crest Mustangs, the South Holland Jets in the SuperBowl. I can't wait."
***********
"Hello Coach, The Hazel Crest Mustangs Peewees won the Super Bowl,
beating the South Holland Jets 13 to 6, and avenging the only loss on
the Mustangs record. The victory was the ninth straight for the
Mustangs." Nick Moyenda, Hazel Crest, Illinois
KENTUCKY
DAVIESS COUNTY FROSH 44, Owensboro 18 - Coach David Crump: "The Daviess County freshmen defeated the Owensboro freshmen for the second time this year last night 44-18. 88 and 99 power led the way. 6 and 7G along with the wedge destroyed the Red Devils. Our passing game consisted of a play I call Blue/Red and Blue/Red Pop. Blue/Red are your red and blue passes combined. When I get 8 men on the front I release both ends on seams routes with a 2 step drop by the QB. He throws to the end that is open. The Pop pass is still Blue/Red with the addition of the A and C backs releasing quickly to the flats on a 45 degree angle or less. My tight ends scored 3 times last night on this play. This year these plays have been very effective from my opponents' 30-yard line in. They have been great first down plays from anywhere. I run these from tight with no motion." (Coach Crump knows the offense. He has been with the Double-Wing from the very first clinic in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, and has attended three other clinics. He has all my tapes and we correspond regularly. He has been a successful high school head coach in his own right, and I value his observations.)
MARYLAND
GREENBELT
RAIDERS 6, Bowie Bulldogs 0 -(Raiders deal Bulldogs their first
loss.) Coach Dwayne Pierce: "Tonight we played the toughest team yet.
!!! They did their homework and scouted us at 3 different games...!!
When an opponent does that he wants to beat you bad. er got the ball
again. I simply told the A back to switch when we ran 99. Coach I ran
77spwr or it might have been 55 !! swpr. I simply told the back to
turn it up just behind where the guard was. We gained big yards on
that one and 5 basic was good also. The wedge worked well until it
started breaking down. The only score came by the defense with an INT
run back for a TD !! We had TOO MANY PENALTIES !! Which killed
drives.... And put us in 3 rd and long spots....or 4th and long....
Coach sorry for being long winded but we lost to this team last year
and I promised myself that I would not lose to them this year. We
play them in 10 days."
*********** "Coach Wyatt; Our season is over and thanks to you our team went 7-1..... !!! We lost a tough game early in the season to the eventual champions. Words can't express the gratitude I owe you for your continued support through out this season. I feel like I belong to a fraternity of DW coaches.....Coach Barnes from Texas and I keep up with each other's progress. I've turned another coach on to the DW and gave him a quick overview of the system. He said he would order your materials and run the DW next year. At my end of the season evaluation (given by the commissioner; whom wanted to see me fail in the first place) I was told that I did a good job but....I'm getting an EGO.......!!! and that isn't good for the club !!! ME ???? I'm a very humble coach and only want to see the ENTIRE CLUB DO WELL..... I must admit it felt DAMN GOOD !! To win the way we did this year !! and shut up a lot of people who wanted to see me fall flat on my ass !!! ANYWAY coach..... good news. The commissioner wants to use 1 system for the ENTIRE CLUB next year.... All of the coaches are being asked to prepare a presentation on their choice of an offensive system. I will have about 3 weeks to get ready......I plan to package this presentation as best I can and let my record speak for itself. Coach I look forward to attending one of your clinics and meeting you in person. Thank you for everything !! Respectfully yours, Coach Dwayne Pierce, Washington, DC"
MILLERSVILLE
WOLVERINES 25 - Maryland City Mustangs 14 - Coach Jason Clarke: "Like
I told you our organization is now known for running the Single-Wing.
Well as soon as my offense took the field, we lineup in the Wildcat
formation, they jumped offside. (I guess their scouting report read
that we normally, run 2-wedge on first sound to start the game!) Then
we lined up to finally run our first play, and I hear the Coach
yelling, they're running the Single-Wing, Time Out, Time Out. He then
adjusted his kids to the appropriate positions to stop us. We then
ran an 88Power, and Coach if you could have seen this play, for me it
made my season. The L-Back blocked the Corner, the double team was on
the defensive end, when the pulling guard and tackle came through,
there was absolutely no one for them to block. The Coach had nicely
positioned his kids inside the box. For the first time this season,
everyone blocked the way they were supposed to. On that play we went
35 yards, because the pursuit caught our A-Back while he tried to
weave his way through the blockers. Our A-Back in that game ended up
getting 217yards on 8 carries with 3 touchdowns. Our C back got 74
yards on 5 carries with 1 touchdown. Yes we spent the majority of
this game on defense, but the interesting tidbit of the game is we
ended with 304 yards total offense. Our four scores came on 3
88-powers, and the other came on the 47-C. We have one more game left
and this will be a tough one for us. The team we are playing has not
lost, and are all 9 years old. We are looking for the big upset this
week. After our season, I hope to be able to send some video from one
of our games. Talk with you later."
*********** "Coach Wyatt I ordered the Dynamics of the Double wing Video & Playbook with the Installing the System, Dynamics II, III, IV from you early last year. This was my first year as a youth league head coach after being a defensive coach for the last 5 years and this has been a Blessed year for me and my kids to finish with a 8 - 0 record and win the B league County Championship..I wanted to know about ordering the Troubleshooting the Double-Wing tape. I really enjoyed learning this system and like to get a like more info on this system....Thanks, Coach Rob Moore, Mitchellville, Maryland"
MASSACHUSETTS
FRONTIER MIDDLE SCHOOL (SOUTH DEERFIELD) 34, Mahar Regional 14. Coach Don Gordon- "Five different players scored. Highlights - we scored on the very first play of the game on TR 88 Super Power and our QB got his first TD on 88 PWR Keep. We are now 6-1. It was a satisfying win for us since they had beaten the one team that beat us. Next we play Athol Regional. They are undefeated at 7-0. It should be a great game."
WEST BOYLSTON SPIRITS 30, Worcester Vikings 6 - "Hi Coach, We faced the undefeated and defending Super Bowl champio Worcester Vikings yesterday for the Central Massachusetts Regional title. Visions of Lambeau Field with temperatures in the 20's, 25 mph wind gusts and driving snow. They had played a 4/4 all year long but started in a 5 and went to a 6. We began pounding inside with Wedge at 2, and then against the 6 we had success with 7G lead, and eventually moved out to the super powers and the down T's. Up 16 to 6 just before the half, we went to Red Red which was open all day, but with the wind it was just over-thrown. The greatest thing about this offense I think is the ability to consistently get positive yardage and eat the clock. They turned the ball over with their first drive in the second half, and we scored on a 10 play, 65 yard drive. After another defensive stop, we pounded out another 9 play scoring drive. Final score- West Boylston Spirits 30, Worcester Vikings 6. Central Massachusetts Pop Warner Midget Champions. On to the regionals. Thanks coach for all of your help." Coach Scott Anderson
WESTFIELD PATRIOTS 20, Agawam Warriors 6- Patriots are SAFL Red Division Champions - Coach Jeff Gordon: "We played Agawam, today, a 6-1 team that has been killing people (They lost their first game last week). They went up 6-0 on a pass play, but we came right back. We couldn't Wedge on them, so we went 88 and 99 to move down the field. My QB hit a wide open reciever on our Twins X-Pass and he ran about 30 yards for the TD. They stopped the 88 Super Power for the extra point. Right before the half our MLB picked off a pass and ran it down to the one yard line. Guess what? QB Wedge for the TD. Tight Wedge at 3 for the 2 points (my best lineman is the left Guard, so we always Wedge at 3). We held them the entire second half, and tried a few different looks that basically just messed us up, so we went back to basics. We had a 3rd and long from the 50, and I called Red-Red. I was screaming for my QB to hit the open TE when I saw him launch it deep for the C-Back...I stopped screaming when the C Back ran under it and scored on a 50 yard pass play...My CB intercepted them on the next drive (He's the C-Back, he had quite a game) and we Wedged and 5X'd them until the clock ran out. This was our last game, and we finished 6-2 and won our division...No playoffs in this touchy-feely league(I guess that would make the other teams feel bad, huh??)so we did as well as I could have hoped...I am so proud of our kids. We took them all out for pizza afterwards. Looks like I will be seeing you in Providence next year....Thanks for all your help."
MICHIGAN
KALAMAZOO CHRISTIAN (8th Grade) 38, Kalamazoo St. Monica 0 - Coach Herb Persons: "We ended our season on a high note! We gained over 350 yards (8 min. quarters) with 2nd string playing almost all of the 2nd half. 90% of 2nd half plays were G's and Traps. We end our season at 5 -1. Anyone who tells you this offence is hard to learn, let me know and I will send them film of my team. We run all the SP's, traps, G's from tight and slot. The XX's, QB rev., 6&7G option plays, TR77SP, and several plays from Over Strong, including a triple option. Once the players learned the numbering system, I could give them a new play, run it 10 times or so to get the timing right and they were ready to go. Isn't it time to start football for next fall? (ha ha)"
TROY COWBOYS 27, Madison Heights Wolverines 0 - Coach Bill Livingstone- "Dear Coach: Playoffs-Troy Cowboys 27, Madison Heights Wolverines 0! D-winged them all day, very stingy defense by MH and by us. Had 231 yards rushing on the day on 37 carries, 6.2 avg. Now 10-0 on the season. As usual, the big plays for us were the G's first, followed by the super powers. The C's hit pretty good too, and of course the play we ran 7 times on the day, WEDGE! Anyway, Super Bowl this week against our arch rival the Clawson Mavericks."
*********** TROY (MICHIGAN) COWBOYS WIN SUPER BOWL: " Dear Coach:Our season ended with a "white knuckles" 16 to 8 Superbowl victory over the Clawson Mavericks. Our kids finished with 386 points, while giving up 32. Their record is 11-0. Because of our success on Varsity, the Junior Varsity will use the double wing next season. We installed two plays for them, which almost got them into the playoffs during the last week of the season. They are now believers! I told my wife the only Christmas present I really want, is your updated video and playbook. To use the cliche we have all heard: "It's the gift that keeps on giving!" Thanks from our kids for a wonderful offense. You have given us one more item for our Thanksgiving. Merry Christmas!" Bill Livingstone, Troy Michigan

PINE CITY FROSH 38, North Branch 12 - Pine City now 7-0 - Coach Mike O'Donnell: "The Dragons tallied in each quarter and had six different players score points on the night as we accumululated over 500 yards in total offense.... For the game, we rushed for over 480 yards but still had a number of penalties which we were fortunately able to overcome. In addition, we hit on six of ten passes which helped balance our attack. Defensively, we intercepted one pass and held a very fine North Branch team to just twelve points. On the night, our A-back was 15x201, our B-backs were 12x96, and our C-back was 12x179."
MISSOURI
ST CHARLES JUNIOR VIKINGS 47, Junior Spartans13. Coach Mike Ryan: "My C-Back scored all seven TDs, 2 on 99 Super O's, 3 on Lead 47 Criss-Cross, and 2 on the goal line version of Red-Red you describe in Tip number 116. We are 4 - 1 - 1 this year, our first running the DW. Thanks for your help."
*********** "The Referee told us that our 47 Criss Cross was the best looking play he had ever seen at our age level. It was a nice compliment." Mike Ryan, St. Charles, Missouri
NEVADA
SPARKS LIONS 7, Reno Eagles 6 - Coach Mike Muniz: "We marched up and down on this rainy night and fumbled two or three times the QB was pulling out too quick. It was fun to watch the double wing at work. We need to work on our backs, teaching them not to dance in the hole. I took charge of the O-line and I call them the HOGS root out the snakes and eat them, they love it sort of makes them special. 6G is GREAT lets 47C and the other counters go for big gains with backs that do not have break away speed, just opens up like Moses parting the red sea. The fans love to watch the surprise of the other teams defense when they can't find the ball, almost criminal. We still have lots of work but in the work is the true reward. Makes me proud and thankful to be part of it. I We scored with THE WEDGE! (boy did that defense hate that play) from the two yard line. After a long drive starting at our 15-the defense stuffed a reverse and caused a fumble.(It's great when the D-end stays home)"
NEW HAMPSHIRE
MANCHESTER BEARS 32, Exeter 20 - Coach John Trisciani: "51 carries, 340 yards rushing. Game plan ws to feature the wedge and we did. 16 wedges for 98 yards. Our motto: "No one stops the Wedge." Exeter played a great game and we knew we need to control the ball."
NEW JERSEY
CAPE MAY RAIDERS 22, Dennis Township 0. Coach Frank Simonsen: "The kids had a ball running some SW ( not one bad snap ).This is the best I have felt all season thanks to your "33" D., the kids played their positions and hit. Next week we play Middle Township to see if we can knock them from the unbeaten, and force a playoff between them and Upper Township. If we had played like this all year we would be playing for the Championship. I feel we are playing D as well as we can. If Middle beats us they will need to beat us playing football and not just running past people out of position. I think our O is as good as it can be run at this level. Without mistakes and with good ball controlling calls we have a good chance to upset them. We only had one fumble this game ( NO BAD SNAPS )."

*********** "Hi Coach Wyatt, It didn't look very promising for us this year. There were two teams in our age group ( 9 yr olds ) and we got the runts of the litter. The regular weight limit for our age is 95 lbs. with each team allowed to carry 5 heavyweights at 100 lbs. We ended up with 17 kids on our roster , 14 of which were under 82 lbs., 10 of them under 74 lbs. We were by far the smallest team in our league. The 7& 8 yr old team was bigger than us. Not only were we small but we had 7 kids who had never played football before.
"We installed the system by following your tape. The kids really picked up on it. One thing that really helped was one of our best players wanted to play QB . This kid worked extremely hard and had a great understanding of the offense , which made everything run a little smoother. We started off slowly ( it looked ugly in our first scrimmages) which invited much criticism from coaches and parents. We won our first game, but lost the second after fumbling on our first three drives. This may sound crazy, but losing that game was the best thing to happen to us. We made changes in our backfield and put more emphasis on protecting the ball. They got better every week and never looked back finishing the regular season at 9-1 and league champions. We then played another 9-1 league champion in our only post season 'playoff ' game winning that 26-0 .
"This offense allowed our undersized team to excel, by pulling, double teaming and downblocking we always had the defense off balance.I don't want to bore with stats ,but if you would like them let me know. Thank you Coach Wyatt! I can't wait to attend another clinic or two this coming year. My assistants will also be attending." Mike Niciforo, East Islip, New York

DURHAM EAGLES 27, Capital City Steelers 6 - "Coach Wyatt, Tonight, we dispatched the Capital City Steelers 27-6 in the Mighty Mite Super Bowl here in Durham. I don't have any stats to send you yet (heck, we only finished playing Garner on Wednesday night), but the score was 6-6 at the half. Their's was the first score that we've given up in our last 4 games. Also, we'd never been tied at the half, and the Steelers were the first team that's scored on us in the 1st Half so this was all brand-new to us. It was an extremely physical game (we lost our star player twice), but in the 2nd Half we ran right at them and they simply couldn't stop the offensive machine. For the season, we outscored our opponents, 260-24. Thanks for your help and support. I'm looking forward to your seminar this spring. Sincerely, Dave Potter Head Coach Durham Fighting Eagles Undefeated 2000 CFF Mighty Mite Champions

TIGARD TIGERS 20, Oregon City 7 - B Back Gavin Jellison had a lot of carries for a lot of yards and 2 TD's. One on 3T2 and another on 2 Wedge. C Back Sammy Carlson posted another solid game with 47C catching the defense sleeping almost every time. coming around the end. Well, this win puts us at 5-2 for the season and a guaranteed playoff berth with a win next week. Hugh, the Pancake Drill has been derided by some of my coaching peers as an ineffective and sissy way to teach blocking and tackling. This team is living proof that it's probably the BEST way to teach it."

Ken Brierly, Coach of the Chariho Cowboys, Rhode Island and New
England Pop Warner champs, is headed with his team to Disney World
for the Pop Warner national championship playoffs. He wrote, "Before
our NE Championship game we heard a group of people who call
themselves coaches talking about our team and that we didn't have a
chance because we didn't have an offense. 'They are just all a
bunched up mess that gets lucky with no clue to offense.' Ha!!!
Obviously they didn't know what the heck they were talking about and
just another example of how some people think when they see something
that they are not familiar with or is different from the norm.
Hopefully we'll surprise a few more people down in Fla."
He went on, "We drew the Mid South Region Champions in the 1st round of Pop Warner Super bowl at Disney World , the Freedom City Broncos, from North Carolina. I'll keep you posted. We play on Wed. Dec 6th."

COWBOYS ADVANCE IN POP WARNER NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS: From Orlando, Florida comes word that the
Chariho Cowboys, New England Pop Warner Junior Midget champs,
defeated their opponents from North Carolina, 30-12 in the first
round of the National Championships. The Cowboys led, 16-0 at the
half, but after their opponents, the Broncos, pulled to within 16-12
in the third quarter, the Cowboys scored two more times to advance.
According to the official Pop Warner account, the final score sounded
like classic Doouble-Wing football: "Taking over on the Bronco 49
yard line and 5:58 to go, the Cowboys started a big time drive of
their own. Pounding downfield with a series of straight-ahead dives,
counter plays and a nifty quarterback rollout left, they went all the
way down to the Broncos' four-yard line. Behind tough-nosed blocking,
Chariho punched the ball into the end zone. With 1:19 left in the
game, the Cowboys took a 30-12 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the
'Boys recovered a Broncs fumble and ran out the clock." Saturday, the
Cowboys play a team called the Oak Grove Red Devils for the National
Championship. (Thanks for the news tip to Greg Labossonniere,
Coventry, Rhode Island and Scott Roberts, Buffalo, New York.)
"Hi
Coach, Well our first season using the Double Wing is over and I
figured I'd write you to tell you how much success we had running it.
2 out of the 3 "competitive teams" made the playoffs. That after last
year they both had losing records, the C team was 2-5-1 and the B
team was 0-8. I coached this years C team (9-10 year olds). The B
team lost in the first round of the playoffs, but went 5-3 on the
year. Us on the other hand went 7-0-1 in the regular season and went
on to win the Super Bowl (Rhode Island State Championship). In the
Super Bowl we played a team that had only giving up 6 points all
year. We beat them 26-6, they could not stop our offense." Steve

MOUNT PLEASANT VIKINGS 13, Titans 6. Coach Jody Hagins: "We could have tied or lost this game on a coaching mistake (I'll get to it later). Anyway, we played the Titans in the Jamboree and the coaches watched our game last week. They had a good game plan to stop our super powers. Put their game plan with our bad snaps and the desire of my wingbacks to turn 88/99 SP into sweeps, and we weren't very effective to the outside. However, for them to stop the off tackle, they had to commit folks to that point of attack. Thus, we started to wedge them. Last night was the best wedge blocking we've had all season (we worked on it a lot at last practice). Both TDs and one PAT came on 2-Wedge (we had well over 100 yards on 2-Wedge -- we play on an 80 yard field). The big coaching mistake was going away from the wedge to TR88SP for the second PAT. Why do something different until they shut it down?"
TENNESSEE
FRANKLIN COWBOYS 39, Brentwood 0- Coach Greg Stout: "We won our first round playoff game Saturday beating Brentwood 39-0. Six different players scored TDs on 6 different plays. We scored on a 3 Trap@2, 29G-O, 88 Super O, XX47C, Wedge Keep, and a 5X. The defense held them to negative yardage and forced 2 fumbles, 2 interceptions and blocked a punt. Played the 2nd and 3rd string on offense the entire 2nd half and they put together a 65 yard drive that took 8 minutes off of the clock. This is the 5th game in a row where we have not gone 3 and out on any possession and we had a 25-15 edge in time of possession. Our kids love running the DW and the parents love it too."

"Coach, We were 8-2 running the DW for the first time. Can't wait until next year. Thanks for your help. I also get advice and help from DW coaches all over the country. DW coaches sure like to see other DW coaches win ball games." Greg Stout, Thompson's Station, Tennessee |
TEXAS
HILL COUNTRY COWBOYS 34, Dripping Springs Tigers 0 - Coach Charles Bergh: "The Double Wing Offense finally kicked into gear yesterday. My team won a big game, 34 to 0, against an arch rival...The Cowboys were fixin' to score again when the clock ran out. Although our scheduled practices during the week got rained out, we found the time to practice and rep our plays...And we rep'd the plays. I now understand the importance of repetition with this offense... (Both teams play in the Texas Youth Football Association (TYFA), where classifications are by age, and there are no weight restrictions.-The Rookies are 8 & 9 years old.)
ROCKWALL MUSTANGS 10, Broncos 0 - Coach Scott Barnes: "Well, we put up over 300 yds rushing in our 3rd game but only put 10 pts on the board. It's hard to believe, but we turned the ball over 5 times. 4 series of 10+plays ended with a fumble. The only excuse I can give is that we were playing on a soaked/muddy field because they watered right before the game(we had the 8:00 a.m. game, and apparently they watered the field from 1:00 a.m. - 7:00. It was a mess! The good news is our Defense only allowed 1 first down and scored on a safety. My dad was in the stands and he said the other parents were complaining because it "wasn't fair" that our boys kept the ball so long! Overall, I was extremely pleased with the way the offense looked after only 3 games against a team in their 3rd year together. That leaves us at the top of the standing at 2-0-1. We scored on T-rip 88 SP getting a 2pt conversion on 38 Black. We also ran a 3 series no-huddle that worked very well, with my C-back getting caught from behind on xx47c. Speed kills, and I ain't got none! I practiced the boys this week with the No-Huddle system Coach Wyatt describes on his website - my wife made the armbands, and they worked terrific. We'll actually use them in a game in a couple of weeks - saving it for the right time - but it is a real effective way to practice the offense. Hey - I'll take an W anyway I can get 'em - but I sure was asking myself 'why haven't I practiced the Wildcat!'"
*********** "Well Coach, we ended on a good note - Rockwall Mustangs -12, Broncos- 0. Our offense kept the ball for about 32minutes out of the 40 we play. Not a great deal of points, but plenty of yardage etc..We scored on 3T2 and the Wedge. My "new" backfield is really clicking. Too bad the season is over! This win gives us the league championship with record of 6-2-1. Not bad for a start up group of boys. I am completely convinced that it was your offense that allowed us to be competitive. We went in with a plan, and executed the plan. I don't know how I could have taught these boys how to tackle, block, stand, line up..and all the other stuff that goes along with 1st year players..AND had to teach them any other offense than your D-Wing! We focused on the basics, and really had some fun. Thanks much for all you've done for me and my boys over the past couple of seasons. I mean it." Scott Barnes, Rockwall, Texas

SPRING BRANCH (HOUSTON) RAMS 13, Longhorns 0 - Coach Frank Raffaldi: "we won the must win game....... so we have our first playoff game tues night at 6...... ....the 13-0 game was interesting since i coached the offense w/ their headcoach last season...they are the longhorns because of the draft and because of last year i know alot about their personell ...they also knew us...... .it was a great game .......we stuck w/ our game plan to run the ball.. w/ 88 spwr......and 77spwr...........we also are beginning to run tight rip stop 77 special pwr as a counter for 88spwr....... anyway we scored on drives of 60 and 50 yards ...we have also been running 88 spwr and qb keepers..................we scored on 2 qb keepers one from the dw and other from the evil eye...... we are playing a physically very similar team w/ a similar record if we stick to our game plan /ball control ..and field position......we have a great opportunity to win."
SOUTHEAST (Houston) RAIDERS 19, ODC Cougars 0 - Coach Brian Maxey: "Coach Wyatt, we finished the season 8-0 now heading into playoffs played two games during the week game one we won 25-7 against last years super bowl champ we scored on tight rip 6-g (7 yards) spread 2 wedge (43 yards) tight 2 wedge (39 yards) tight 2 wedge counter (25 yards) game two we scored on tight 2 wedge (20 yards) spread slant pass (60 yards) tight 99 super power "
UTAH
HILLCREST HUSKIES 20, Riverton Silverwolves 0 - Coach Glen Page: "After two games we are 2-0. Our first week we played the Bingham Miners and won 19-0. We piled up around 300 yards on the ground. Week two saw much of the same action. We rushed for about 380 yards and beat the Riverton Silverwolves 20-0. We've only passed the ball seven times in two games. We have scored six touchdowns with five different backs. So far most of our success has come off the trap and 6/7 G. The parents in our league think I'm some sort of genius. During the first game my wife said she heard quite a bit of snickering about our lack of passing. She was happy to report that she didn't hear one word about it during the second game."
TAYLORSVILLE WARRIORS - 28 Granger Lancers 6 - "My 11 year olds played their first game today and we beat a pretty good team 28-6. The counters went big, our powers need work. You may remember an official last year who told me my wings couldn't push on the tackles on 2 wedge. We had him today, and the head lead official straightened him out last year on the wedge. Today, he made up another rule. We shift into punt formation like you do. I make sure my punter don't simulate taking a snap. In fact his hands are on the centers back. This yo-yo who has been officiating 30 years said my punter couldn't back pedal to his punt position. He said he had to turn sideways and run back. I don't know where he got that, but we only had to punt that once." Coach Al Andrus (whose 14-year-old team last year led the state in scoring - 38 points per game.)
TAYLORSVILLE WARRIORS 20, Copper Hills Grizzlies12 - Warriors win their division and head into the playoffs as the number 1 seed.
VERMONT
CENTRAL VERMONT PANTHERS 13, St. Johnsbury Raiders - 0 - Coach Neil Martel: "This is our second win and also second shut out. The wedges were big gainer this time as were 88 powers. Also QB keep off of fake of rip 88 power. The other team's coach was amazed that we could teach kids at this age (11&12 years) to pull. I told him we started on day one and just keep repping it and the kids love to do it. He said he felt like he never got his offense to have any possession time as his defense was always on the field. In the first half (we play 25 min running halves) we had the ball for nearly 16 minutes. Also tackling techniques are working as this was second game in a row in which we posted a shut out. Thanks coach."
VIRGINIA
CAVE SPRING REBELS 27, North Roanoke Chargers 0 - Coach Armando Castro: "Hi Coach.Great day we had here in Roanoke.Championship Game.Cave Spring Rebels 27-0 over North Roanoke Chargers. On to the Super Bowl! This team a much bigger team than us.Again made grave mistake.Look out for one back coming on 88 super power. We killed them with 3charlie which then opened up the super powers and 47c.Again this is exactly what we needed(Double Wing).Cause for a long time we had an offensive coordinator who was stubborn as a mule.Would get insulted if anyone said anything to him.Would run plays designed by him that worked ,and looked like they were designed by him.So against good teams we would always lose in overtime 6-0,12-7,etc.This year when i took over guess who was the first thing i got rid of.His system was second. We needed help on offense, and we got it with the Double Wing.I' ll keep you posted.CoachCastro"
CRAIG COUNTY COUGARS 16, Glenver 0 - Cougars now 4-0
STERLING BEARS 18, Purcellville Packers 13 - Coach Scott Russell: "The BEARS kicked off, but recovered a PACKER fumble and drove down to the PACK 7 yard line. Then, our chosen son, #45 in the program and #1 in your hearts, Andrew Russell, took it in around right end to "Six Point City" for his 2nd TD of the season. We failed to convert. We scored a second TD on an awesome 24 yard run by our Silver team FB phenom, Justin Low, and again, failed to convert, 12-6. Our 3 Back, Caise Vickery, Jr., rushed all day but could seem to break away for more than 6-7 yards at a clip and always brought down by a gang of PACK DBs. We went to the half down 13-12. After the half-time festivities, we received the 2nd half kick off and ate up a lot of valuable time gaining yardage and first downs, when #4, Caise Vickery looked like he was going to finally cross the impregnable imaginary plane. But, the impression that effect of the "hometown" aura on officiating was remarkable. Caise rushed all day, gaining a season high of 80+ yards when he raced to the left goal line pylon and knocked it over for an apparent TD. Alas, it was ruled short, putting us at 1st and goal at the 1, late in the 3rd quarter. The defensive alignment was tight up the middle to prevent a QB sneak and a possible TD for #11, our QB, Braden Sager, so our 4 back, #30, Onzy Elam, scampered in off tackle for the icer. Now we face the JETS in a rematch of a sloppily played 12-0 BEARS loss 14 days ago in our first round of single elimination play-offs, Friday 3 November 2000 at 7:30 pm at the Wm. Allen Memorial SportsPlex. How many tickets do you need?"
WASHINGTON
EDMONDS CYCLONES 19. South Coounty Warriors 13 - Coach Glade Hall: "On Sunday our Edmonds Cyclones faced off with the South County Warriors in the championship and won 19-13 in a very exciting game. We scored on three long drives using the 88 and 99 Super Powers to slowly hammer our way down the field. Our kids made several great fourth and long conversions using Tight Rip Red-Red. The score was tied up at 13-13 with nine minutes to go when we regained possession. We went on a long 80-yard drive running 14 plays and using up nearly six minutes of the clock. We scored the winning touch down when I called TR 88 SP QB Bootleg Left. South County had chance to win it at the end but our kids played good defense and stopped them as the clock ran out. We finished the year at 10-0 and the league champion."

WISCONSIN
FRANKLIN SABERS 27, Cudahy Bulldogs 7 - Coach Rick Senk: "Closed our season with a nice win. 38 Offensive plays for 305 yards. 4 of 8 passing. 88 Super Power and 38 G-O put the game away early. We were able to get 2nd team offense in at the start of the 2nd quarter. A diluted 2nd team defense gave up a late 4th quarter score. I would like to thank you Coach Wyatt for help and guidance in making the transition to the DW easy and very productive. If you will permit me Coach Wyatt, I would like to pass on some advice. Although we had only 2 losses this season, they were due to a couple of coaching errors that I regret. First, establish the Power and Super Powers early. Do not panic and be patient. Let the defense see and defend the Power plays. In both losses we knew their potential weakness and went at it too early. Second, would be size of your players. Even though we have 40 players on our roster. Pound for pound we were one of the smallest teams with only 8 legitimate linemen. We played teams that had entire lines 3 to 4 inches taller than us, including the 2 teams that gave us losses. I do not know what they feed these boys but there is no substitute for Horsepower. Third, Choose your Guards wisely. These guys are the cutting edge of your sword. As a coaching staff we are well aware that this was our Achilles heal and we must and will improve at this position. Fourth and last, think in terms of first downs,"Don't get greedy". Thanks again Hugh!!"
